Burger chose cricket to study for free
New Delhi. South African fast bowler Nandre Berger had never even dreamed of playing professional cricket. He chose cricket for free studies. He got admission in the University of Witwatersrand through cricket trials in 2014 and got a full scholarship. Since then he did not look back. 28-year-old fast bowler Burger is the main bowler of South Africa playing in all three formats today. He made his debut in the national team in December last year. Left arm fast bowler Burger is currently playing for Rajasthan Royals in IPL. Rajasthan had bought Burger for Rs 50 lakh in IPL auction 2024.
Nandre Burger also played for Johannesburg Super Kings in the SA20 last month. Speaking to the website ESPN Cric Info, Nandre Berger said, ‘Sounds good, doesn’t it? Wits was giving scholarships to students who play cricket. I did not want to become a cricketer but there was no harm in trying my hand for free education. Cricket was a backup for my studies. Andre Berger’s university coach Neil Levenson saw in him a capable fast bowler.

‘I laughed while reading and then…’
Nandre Berger said, ‘At first I laughed that I bowl at a speed of 125 km per hour. I can’t put from 145km. I still agreed to them and then I started enjoying. Nandre Berger made his IPL debut this season against Lucknow Super Giants. At the age of 15, Berger was among the top players in his age group at the regional tennis championships. At the age of 17, he participated in the South Africa National Squash Championship. But due to back injury he turned to cricket.
