New Delhi. It is said that records are made only to be broken. Many big records of cricket have become a thing of the past with the passage of time. But on the contrary, there are some records which have not been broken even after many years. This also includes the record of great all-rounder Kapil Dev, which no one has been able to break even after 40 years. Kapil made this record in the year 1983 against West Indies. The bowling analysis recorded by Kapil as captain in the match held in Ahmedabad between 12 and 16 November 1983 is till date the best bowling analysis of an innings by any captain in Test cricket.
In the second innings of this match, Kapil took 9 wickets for 83 runs in 30.3 overs. This is so far the best bowling performance of any captain in an innings in Test. It is a different matter that despite this performance of Kapil, the Indian team had to face a defeat of 138 runs in the match. During the innings, Kapil started the process of taking wickets by bowling Gordon Greenidge and after this the next 8 wickets were taken in the form of Viv Richards, Larry Gomes, Gus Logie, Clive Lloyd, Jeff Dujon, Malcolm Marshall, Wayne Daniel and Michael Holding. There were shocks. The first wicket of the innings fell in the form of Desmond Haynes, this wicket was taken by Balwinder Sandhu who became the second bowler apart from Kapil Dev to take a wicket in the innings.
Unlucky… this player had missed taking a hat-trick in ODI debut, now becomes a body builder
Also took 8 wickets in the innings as captain
Apart from Kapil, till now no captain has been able to accomplish the feat of taking 9 wickets in an innings. As captain, apart from taking 9 wickets in an innings, Kapil has also taken 8 wickets in an innings once. In the Adelaide Test against Australia in December 1985, he sent back 8 batsmen for 108 runs. Imran Khan of Pakistan and Rangana Herath of Sri Lanka are the other bowlers to take eight wickets in an innings as captain. Imran took eight wickets in the innings against India in Karachi Test in December 1982 (8/60) and Herath took eight wickets in the innings against Zimbabwe in Harare in November 2016 (8/63).
Same score, same runs by three batsmen and…many coincidences in a test between India and Pakistan
Became the bowler who took the most wickets in 1994
In 1994, Kapil Dev became the bowler who took the most wickets in Test cricket, leaving behind Richard Hadlee of New Zealand. Coincidentally, he broke Headley’s record of 431 wickets in the same Motera Stadium where he had achieved the feat of taking 9 wickets in an innings as captain against West Indies. Kapil got his 432nd wicket by getting Sri Lanka’s Hasan Tillakaratne caught by Sanjay Manjrekar and took Hadlee’s record in his name. Kapil, who took 434 wickets at an average of 29.64 in 131 Tests, has so far been surpassed by 10 bowlers, including India’s Anil Kumble (619 wickets) and Ravichandran Ashwin (516 wickets). Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan has the most wickets in Test cricket, he took 800 wickets in 133 Tests at an average of 22.72.
The ‘bad boys’ of cricket; Some got into trouble with the umpire, some with the police and some with their partner.
Walsh has the most wickets in the match as captain.
Even though Kapil has taken the most wickets in an innings as captain, the record of taking most wickets in a Test as a captain is in the name of West Indies’ Courtney Walsh. Fast bowler Walsh took 13 wickets for 55 runs (7 wickets in the first innings and 6 wickets in the second innings) in the Wellington Test against New Zealand in 1995. Pakistan’s Waqar Younis and Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath also took 13-13 wickets in the match as captain, but both of them gave more runs than Walsh. Waqar took 13 wickets for 135 runs in the Karachi Test against Zimbabwe in 1993 and Herath took 13 wickets for 152 runs in the 2016 Test against Zimbabwe in Harare. After this comes Pakistan’s Fazal Mahmood, who captained Pakistan in the Dhaka Test against West Indies in 1959 and took 12 wickets for 100 runs.
