In the US too, Facebook left behind all the apps like WhatsApp, Tiktok’s competitor Likee in the 8th place in the app list
Beijing, Aug 10 (IANS) | Chinese short-video platform TikTok has overtaken Facebook to become the most downloaded social media app in the world. According to Nikkei Asia, a global survey of downloads in 2020 has featured TikTok at the top of the list of social media providers for the first time since it was first studied in 2018.
TikTok’s parent company ByteDance launched the international version of the short-video platform in 2017, the report said, and has since overtaken Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, all of which are owned by Facebook, even That in America too. The app’s popularity grew during the pandemic, the report said, when it has become a major download in Europe, South America and the US.
Chat and communication platform Discord has benefited from the need to isolate people during the pandemic. It is popular among gamers for online chat and has also been given a financial reward by Sony Group. In early 2021, WhatsApp announced that it would share messaging data related to interactions between users and companies with Facebook. Although WhatsApp promises to protect information about communication between friends and family, some users have migrated to other apps.
Continuing that trend, Telegram, a messaging app originally developed in Russia but now based in Germany, jumped to seventh place. The report mentions that Telegram has also been powered by the COVID-19 pandemic. China’s Likee, a TikTok competitor used by many companies for marketing, is ranked eighth in the latest global download league.
