Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari today expressed concern over road accidents occurring in India and said that India tops the world in terms of death toll in road accidents. Gadkari, in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, said that India ranks first in the number of people killed in road accidents and third in the number of injured.

2 lakh will get compensation
The road ministry has constituted a standing committee to provide more compensation to road accident victims under a scheme. This committee was constituted under the ‘Hit and Run’ Motor Accident Scheme 2022.

According to a memorandum issued by the Ministry of Roads and Transport, Amit Vardan, joint secretary in the ministry, has been appointed as the chairman of the committee. Two more joint secretaries of the finance ministry – Saurabh Mishra and Amit Singh Negi – have also been named as members of the standing committee.
According to the information, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has increased the amount of compensation to be given to seriously injured person in such cases from Rs 12,500 to Rs 50 thousand. Along with this, the amount in case of death has been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh.
