WhatsApp has banned more than 18 lakh accounts in India in March 2022. The company released its tenth monthly report under IT Rules 2021. According to this, between March 1 and March 31, more than 18 lakh accounts have been closed in India. The company said that it received a total of 597 grievance reports from across the country in March and action has been taken against 74 of them. A company spokesperson issued a statement saying that the company has made public the March 2022 report under the IT Rules 2021. In this user safety report, complete details of complaints received from users and actions taken on them have been given. Along with this, the company has also given details of the efforts being made to prevent misuse of the platform in this report.

The company has prepared this report from the abuse detection approach and it also includes the action taken against the negative feedback received from the report feature given in WhatsApp. The government had made it mandatory for digital and social media platforms with more than 50 lakh users to publish monthly reports under the IT Rules 2021.

That’s why millions of accounts were banned
It is believed that WhatsApp has banned these accounts for wrongdoings like tampering, forwarding wrong information or fraud with other users. For the past few years, WhatsApp has been taking such necessary steps to make its platform safe for users. This has also helped in curbing fake news that is becoming increasingly viral on WhatsApp.
More than 14 lakh accounts were banned in February
In February this year, Meta had banned 14.26 lakh Indian WhatsApp accounts on the basis of complaints received through the Grievance report and its own detection policy. The company had received 335 grievance reports between February 1 and 28 and action was taken against 21 of these accounts.
