About two months ago, in an unprecedented experiment, a person in America who was given a pig’s heart has died. The Maryland Hospital, which performed the surgery, gave this information on Wednesday. David Bennett (57) died on Tuesday at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Doctors have not given the reason for his death, but said that his condition had started deteriorating several days ago.
Bennett’s son praised the hospital for this novel experiment and said the family hoped it would help in its efforts to address the shortage of organs. Bennett had surgery on January 7, after which his son said his father knew the experiment was no guarantee of success.
Initially, Bennett’s body was working with a pig’s heart, and the Maryland Hospital periodically updated that Bennett was slowly recovering. Last month, the hospital released a video of him watching a football match from his hospital bed while working with his physical therapist.
