The Indian telecom industry is currently on a recovery path and is getting full support from the government to move forward. But do you know what rank India is in the world in terms of mobile and internet speed. You will be glad to know that India has jumped the ranks of average internet speed offered for both mobile and fixed broadband speeds globally. Ookla, a speed test platform available to users globally, maintains a performance index of all countries in terms of offering the best internet speed. In its monthly updates, India seems to be making progress. Although it is not a huge progress, it is still fine.
India in Mobile and Broadband Speed
For mobiles, Ookla said that Indians have an average internet speed of 14.18 Mbps and the country has moved up one spot to 115th position. In terms of fixed broadband, India jumped two ranks and is now ranked 70th, offering an average internet speed of 48.14 Mbps. While this may be some progress, India still lags behind many countries in providing the best internet experience to consumers.

These countries are top in terms of speed
The top of the list in the mobile segment is United Arab Emirates (UAE) which offers 133.51 Mbps average download speed. Norway ranks second with an average download speed of 118.58 Mbps. Things like the number of people living in a country also make a big difference. The population of Norway and UAE is relatively small as compared to India. Thus the bandwidth capacity is sufficient for the users to get the very high average download speed.
– In the fixed broadband segment, Chile has jumped two ranks to occupy the first position by offering an average download speed of 197.59 Mbps. Singapore ranks second offering an average download speed of 194.07 Mbps.
In the fixed broadband sector, India still has a lot of room for improvement. There are many areas in the country where optical fiber has not yet been deployed. With time, India’s figures are expected to see a significant improvement. Telecom operators and Internet service providers are aggressively upgrading their networks and services in the country.
