Controversy has intensified over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s proposed visit to Osmania University. Meanwhile, some students of the university have reached the court and sought permission to allow Rahul Gandhi to participate in the program. The application was filed in the High Court on behalf of the Congress affiliated student organization NASUI, hearing which the High Court has asked the VC of the university to consider organizing the program once again. Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Telangana is proposed on May 6 and 7 during which he was to visit Osmania University. Here he is going to address the students. Apart from this, there are plans to participate in some more programs.
Describing his visit as a non-political event, the Congress has said that he will only communicate with the students. At the same time, the university administration has refused permission saying that no non-academic activity can be allowed, in which any political person is involved. The university has referred to a 2017 High Court decision, which said that no political activity can be allowed in the university. After this order, the university had passed a resolution that no non-academic activity can take place in the campus, in which any political person participates.
However, a section of the university’s faculty does not consider anything wrong in organizing Rahul Gandhi’s event. Law professor G. Vinod Kumar said that this is not a political but intellectual activity. Rahul Gandhi is coming to discuss some issues with the students. The Congress has attacked the state’s ruling party Telangana Rashtra Samithi over the ban on Rahul Gandhi’s visit.
The Congress said that there is an effect of Congress leadership on the university administration. Due to this, permission has not been given for Rahul Gandhi’s visit on his behalf. Osmania University has been considered as the ground zero of the movement for the formation of Telangana. In such a situation, with the presence of Rahul Gandhi here, the Congress party wants to give a message. It has to be seen what decision is given by the court regarding Rahul Gandhi’s program.
