More than a quarter of strokes occurred in patients under the age of 60, with more than 10 percent of patients experiencing more than one neurological condition
London, July 28 (IANS)| Researchers have found that stroke was a common complication among hospitalized adults with severe COVID-19, with it being higher than expected in younger people. The study, led by a team at the University of Southampton in the UK, showed that risk factors such as diabetes and high blood pressure contributed to the risk of stroke in many people, including young people. The study, published in the journal Brain Communications, examined 267 cases of neurological and psychiatric problems related to COVID-19 in the UK.
Of the 267 cases, stroke was the most frequently reported condition, affecting about half of the patients. More than a quarter of strokes occurred in patients under the age of 60, many of whom had modifiable risk factors, meaning they were already at risk for stroke. Other common conditions include delirium, psychiatric events, and other evidence of brain damage (encephalopathy). More than 10 percent of patients experienced more than one neurological condition, and these patients were more likely to require intensive care and ventilation.
Amy Ross-Russell, Research Fellow at the NIHR Southampton Clinical Research Facility at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, explained that it was not only how many different neurological and psychiatric events we looked at in this study, but also how some of these The conditions occurred simultaneously within the same patients. This suggests that COVID can affect multiple parts of the nervous system in a single patient.
Ross-Russell said, “Patients with stroke also had a blood vessel blockage or thrombosis elsewhere in the body, so it is important to understand why some strokes occur during COVID.” The finding suggests that COVID increases the risk of stroke, including in young people. Public health measures can reduce this, including lifestyle measures to avoid the development of diabetes and hypertension, good control of blood sugar and blood pressure and avoid the risk of severe COVID-19 through vaccination and other public health measures.
