What is exit poll?
There is such a survey which is done by interviewing the voters who came out of the polling booth after casting their vote. In this, many questions are asked and it is tried to know who the voter has voted for.
Why does the poll come only after voting?
Under Section 126A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, nothing should happen during the voting which affects the psychology of the voters. Exit polls cannot be telecast for one and a half hours after the end of voting.
Why oppose it?
They are neither very scientific nor are they prepared on the basis of talking to many people. Usually they are often far from reality. There is a demand for a ban on this in many countries.
when did it start
The first exit polls came in 1967. The credit for starting it goes to Marcel von Dam, a sociologist and former politician from the Netherlands. He started the exit polls for the first time on 15 February 1967. Then the assessment was accurate.
37 major exit polls reversed in 20 years
In the last 5 Lok Sabha elections, that is, from 1999 till now, there were 37 big exit polls. In the elections held in 1999, most of the exit polls showed a big victory for the NDA. He had given more than 315 seats to the NDA. After the results, NDA got 296 seats.
2004 The exit polls proved to be a complete failure. Estimates claimed that the Congress was not making a comeback. Everyone had shown BJP getting majority, but it did not happen. NDA could not even get 200 seats. After this, Congress formed the government at the center with the support of SP and BSP.
2009 In 2014 also, agencies had speculated that the UPA would get 199 and the NDA 197 seats, but the UPA had secured 262 seats. NDA was reduced to 159 seats.
2014 The exit polls showed NDA getting a majority. One agency had predicted 291 seats for the BJP and 340 for the NDA. The result was close to the estimate. BJP got 282 seats and NDA got 336 seats.
