According to the department, prepaid smart meters will be installed across the country by March 2025.
The Ministry of Power on Thursday fixed the deadline for installing smart meters. The ministry has given a timeline for conversion of meters to smart meters with prepaid facilities in government offices, commercial buildings and other offices including industrial units.
The notification also states that the State Electricity Commission can extend the time limit twice but for a maximum period of six months, but for this there must be a valid reason. According to the department, prepaid smart meters will be installed across the country by March 2025.
The Ministry of Power has said that all government offices at block level and above, all industrial and commercial customers should be provided electricity through smart meters by December 2023. According to a notification issued by the ministry on Thursday, all customers (except agricultural users) in areas having communication network will be provided electricity with smart meters operating in prepaid or prepaid mode.
All UTs, power departments with more than 50 per cent customers in urban areas, AT&C (total technical and commercial) loss of more than 15 per cent in 2019-20, AT&C from 25 per cent in FY 2019-20 Loss of excess, all block and above level government offices and all industrial and commercial customers will be connected with smart meters by December 2023.
