The team of Italy’s University of Salerno examined 1401 patients
London, July 21 (IANS)| Through tests about heart-related problems of hospitalized Kovid-infected patients, it can be known how serious the risk of their death is. Although SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, primarily affects the respiratory tract, it also causes cardiac complications, including severe arrhythmias, acute coronary syndrome, myocarditis and pulmonary embolism.
A team of researchers from the University of Salerno in Italy examined 1,401 patients who had been hospitalized for treatment after being confirmed COVID. About 226 (16.1%) underwent transthoracic echocardiography within 48 hours of admission. Of these, 68 patients (30.1 percent) died in hospital. KLeft ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), low tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, and acute respiratory distress syndrome were independently associated with in-hospital mortality.
“Clinical and echocardiographic parameters of disease severity may help determine whether COVID patients are at high risk for in-hospital mortality,” said lead author Angelo Silverio, from the University of Salerno. The research was published in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation.
The study suggests that early LVEF can be very useful for identifying patients with a high probability of a fatal outcome as cardiovascular complications can have a negative impact on the outcome of COVID patients. A growing body of research suggests that some people with high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease may develop more severe symptoms and complications once infected with the coronavirus.
