On the special occasion of Diwali, a good news has come out from Britain for the country. Britain’s Indian-origin Finance Minister Rishi Sunke has honored the Father of the Nation on the occasion of Diwali by releasing a five-pound coin with a picture in memory of Gandhiji’s life.
Available in multiple standards including gold and silver, the special collector’s coin is designed by Heena Glover and features one of Gandhi’s most famous sayings – ‘My life is my message’ as well as the national flower of India, the lotus. An image has been engraved. Sunke said the coin is a fitting tribute to one of the world’s most influential leaders, Mahatma Gandhi, who has inspired millions across the world. As a Hindu, I am very proud to release this coin of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Diwali. Mahatma Gandhi played an important role in India’s freedom movement and for the first time it is wonderful to issue a UK coin to commemorate his remarkable life.’
Significantly, the cultural ties between India and Britain are getting stronger day by day and the issue of this coin with the picture of Gandhiji is proof of this. This coin has been put up for sale on the Royal Mint website of the UK. Gold bars weighing 1 gram and 5 grams are also put up for sale on this website for Indians under the Diwali Collection section. The picture of Lakshmiji is also inscribed on this gold bar.
