The holy epic Bhagavad Gita has been made compulsory in all schools of Gujarat. In a move that has surprised many, Gujarat Education Minister Jitu Vaghani has said that the Bhagavad Gita will be taught to students of classes 6 to 12.
According to reports, the reason behind making Bhagavad Gita a mandatory part of the school syllabus is to promote ‘Indian culture and knowledge system’. The move is expected to be implemented in schools in Gujarat from the upcoming academic year 2022-23.
According to a report by news agency ANI, Education Minister Vaghani has said that the Bhagavad Gita will be introduced in parts. This sacred text will be introduced in the form of story and text in the text books for classes 6 to 8. For classes 9 to 12, it will be introduced in the form of story and text in a first language text book.

Talking more about this new idea of having Bhagavad Gita in the syllabus of Gujarat schools, the education minister said, “The text of Bhagavad Gita should be included in the prayer program.
He said, step forward will be taken with the introduction of new study material. It is likely that the text books will either be revamped or new books will be introduced which will focus solely on deriving information from the Bhagavad Gita.
