A senior Congress leader is about to say ‘goodbye’ to the party. In fact, AK Antony, who was a Union Minister, has written a letter to Sonia Gandhi saying that he now wants to retire from active politics and will not contest any elections. Antony, 81, has told Sonia Gandhi that his Rajya Sabha term is ending on April 2 and he does not want to seek re-election after that. He is currently a Rajya Sabha MP from Kerala.
AK Antony will no longer be in Delhi
AK Antony has also said that he will no longer live in Delhi. Soon he will shift to Thiruvananthapuram. He has been in politics for 52 years. For the first time in 1970, he became an MLA in Kerala. He was the leader of the Congress youth and student wing. Antony has been the Chief Minister of Kerala thrice. At the age of 37, he became the Chief Minister of Kerala.
Became Union Minister thrice and reached Rajya Sabha five times
Antony was the President of the Congress Parliamentary Committee for 10 years and reached the Legislative Assembly five times. He was a Union Minister thrice and reached the Rajya Sabha five times.
During the Kerala Assembly elections last year, Antony had said that he now wants to retire from electoral politics. Antony said, ‘I have informed Sonia ji about leaving active politics. I had informed this informally to Sonia Gandhi a few months back. I have also informed the PCC President and other colleagues. The party has given me many opportunities and I will always be grateful to the Congress. Now I want to leave Delhi and go to Thiruvananthapuram in April.
