There is relief news for the youth who are dreaming of teaching in the central universities of the country. PhD degree will no longer be mandatory for teaching in central universities. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to do away with the requirement of PhD. The experts of the subject related to this decision of UGC will be able to teach in the university. Students will also get benefit of this.
Apart from this, UGC is also planning to create many new and special posts. PhD will not be required for appointment to these posts. According to the report published in Times of India, these posts can be Professor of Practice and Associate Professor of Practice. In this regard, UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar said, “There are many experts who want to teach. It could be someone who has implemented big projects and has experience doing the groundwork, it could be a great dancer or a musician too.
Jagdesh Kumar said, “But we cannot appoint him as per the existing rules. Therefore it has been decided to create special posts which will not require PhD degree. Experts only have to show their experience.
The proposal was discussed during the meeting of Vice Chancellors (VCs) of Central Universities with the UGC President on this issue. In the meeting, it was decided to constitute a committee to work on amending the rules for appointment of teachers in central universities. The meeting was convened to discuss, among other things, progress in the implementation of the National Policy on Education (NEP).
Apart from all this, the UGC also plans to start a portal through which the accounts of teachers’ recruitment can be kept. This will not delay the recruitment process of teachers. According to the Ministry of Education, as of December 2021, more than 10,000 educational posts are lying vacant in centrally funded institutions.
