Ira Basu is the sister of Meera Bhattacharya, two-time Chief Minister of West Bengal and wife of leftist leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Bhattacharya was the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the last 10 years of the 34-year government of the Daberi Morcha.

Local people say that despite being on the footpath, Ira never begged. She drinks tea with her own money. She also feeds Biryani to the shopkeepers with her own money. She buys rice, pulses, vegetables for herself from a hotel. Also if someone offers to eat, they refuse. IRA also has its own bank account, from which she withdraws money as per her need.
Basu, a life science teacher at Priyanath Girls High School in Dunlop area of North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, received PF amount after retirement. But his pension could not start due to lack of necessary paperwork. Ira, 72, lives in a corner of an ATM near Dunlop Mode in the district. Very few people here know about him. Ira started her career as a teacher in 1976. She retired on 28 June 2009. Ira Basu worked as a teacher at the school for 34 years, but she was not just a teacher. He won the 100m title in West Bengal state level athletics. He has also played table tennis and cricket.
