Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP AK Antony has now decided to say goodbye to active politics. He wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi saying that he no longer wants to contest the Rajya Sabha elections but wants to leave Delhi and stay in Thiruvananthapuram. AK Antony was in politics for 52 years. The special thing is that he started politics from Congress itself and now he is finishing his electoral political innings in Congress itself. Antony is considered a major contributor to the Kerala Congress. It is said that he has always kept his word boldly. He also asked Indira Gandhi to lift the emergency.
Addressing the convention of the All India Congress Committee in Guwahati in 1976, AK Antony had asked Indira Gandhi to lift the Emergency. AK Antony came into the politics of the Center in the early 80s. After this he was the General Secretary of AICC. She was also a member of the Congress Working Committee in the programs of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He also worked with Narasimha Rao, Sitaram Kesari, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
AK Antony was a member of the Congress Core Committee and served as the Defense Minister in the government of Dr. Manmohan Singh. During the two terms of the UPA, he was an elected member of the Congress Leadership Team. AK Antony is also very important for Sonia Gandhi. Many times AK Antony proved successful in handling the internal discord within the Congress.
When the Congress broke up in 1978, he resigned as the Chief Minister of Kerala. At that time there was a Congress coalition government in Kerala. He also protested against the party which supported Indira Gandhi in the Chikmagalur by-election. However, after a few days, Indira Gandhi again came to power. After this, Antony broke away from Sharad Pawar’s Congress (S) and formed Congress (A). After a few days, this party merged with the Congress itself. Indira Gandhi was also present in Kochi on this occasion.
