Fast story of Devuthani Ekadashi-
There is a mythological story related to Devuthani Ekadashi. According to this story, in ancient times there lived a king in a city. All the people of that state kept fast and worshiped on Ekadashi as per the rituals. On the day of Ekadashi, food was not given to any animal, bird or animal. An outsider came to the court of the king of that city to get a job. Then the king said that work will be available but food will not be available on Ekadashi fast for two days every month.
Happy to get the job, the man accepted the king’s condition. He was not given food on the fast of Ekadashi next month. During the fast, he was given only fruits but his hunger did not go away due to which the man became worried. He reached the king’s court and told him that eating fruits would not fill his stomach. He will die without food. He prayed to the king for food.
On this the king said that you were already told that food will not be available on Ekadashi. But the man again requested to get food. Understanding his condition, the king ordered to give him food. He was given pulses, rice and flour. Then the person took bath on the river bank and prepared food. When the food was ready, he invited Lord Vishnu and said, Shri Hari, the food is ready, come and eat it first.
After receiving the invitation, Lord Vishnu appeared there. He brought out food for his gods and they started eating. Then that person also had food and went to his work. After this Lord Vishnu also returned to Vaikuntha. On the next Ekadashi, he demanded double the food from the king. He told that last time he was hungry because God had also eaten with him.
The king was surprised to hear this from that person. The king said that we do not believe that even God has eaten with you. On this statement of the king, the person said that you can go and see for yourself whether this is true. Then on the day of Ekadashi he was given double the food. He took the food to the river bank. That day the king was also hiding behind a tree and watching everything.
That person first took bath in the river. Then prepared food and told Lord Vishnu that the food is ready and you should eat it, but Vishnu ji did not come. That person called Sri Hari several times but he did not come. Then he said that if you do not come, I will commit suicide by jumping into the river. Still Shri Hari did not come. Then he proceeded to jump into the river. Then Lord Vishnu appeared and saved him from jumping.
After this Shri Hari Vishnu had food with him. Then he took him with him to Vaikuntha. The king was surprised to see this. Now the king understood that Ekadashi fast is observed with a pure mind and pure conduct, only then one gets the full benefit of the fast. From that day the king also observed Ekadashi fast with a pure heart and worshiped Lord Vishnu. At the end of his life, all the sins of the king were erased and he attained heaven.
