YouTuber Will Osman decided to build his own X-ray machine after receiving a hefty hospital bill. After the treatment, Usman was sent a hospital bill of $69,000 (Rs 52.63 lakh), which included only two nights of hospitalization, X-rays and a course of antibiotics. He was lucky that his insurance paid most of his bill but he still had to pay $2,000. Usman, a content creator and engineer at YouTube, said he wants to build his own medical equipment to prove that the $69,000 bill is false.
He was curious to see if he could build his own X-ray machine for less than $2,500, along with the cost of his annual insurance plan. He built a working X-ray machine out of a $400 power supply, a $155 X-ray vacuum tube, some Geiger counters, and a roll of sheet metal. Osman told UNILAD that X-rays are difficult to see, however, a special sheet material is used to view the X-rays, called an intensifying screen, which is then captured with a DSLR camera. I chose to take photos in low light.
He said I used 40kV silicone insulated wire and surrounded it with extra silicone tubing and then just stayed off the tube during operation. After initial tests, a massive 2 mm lead sheet was placed around the tube. Usman admitted that this is the most dangerous thing I have ever made. He has destroyed the machine because he built it only for show. Note that you should not do radiation-hazardous projects at home as they can be fatal if handled incorrectly.
