Smoke rises after an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon.

Jerusalem: After allegedly creating havoc in Lebanon with the blasts of pagers and electronic equipment, the Israeli army has now carried out a major air strike last night. Many Hezbollah bases have been destroyed in this. The Israeli army said that it targeted many bases in southern Lebanon with cannons and jet planes. Last week too, Israel had carried out a large-scale attack on Hezbollah communication equipment. After this, the tension between the two sides has increased even more.

The army said the air strikes hit Hezbollah positions in Chihine, Taybe, Blida, Meis al-Jabal, Ataroun and Kafarkela in southern Lebanon, as well as a Hezbollah weapons storage facility in the area of Khiyam. Israeli media reported that several Israeli civilians were injured in a retaliatory anti-tank missile attack from Lebanon, but there was no official confirmation of this. The latest Israeli attacks have raised concerns about an escalation of the conflict on the border with southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces have been fighting Iranian-backed Hezbollah for months.

Hezbollah hits back

After seeing pagers and electronic equipment blasted and several of its hideouts destroyed, Hezbollah on Wednesday fired about 20 shells into Israel, most of which were intercepted by air defense systems without causing any damage. About 10 missiles were fired at the Mount Hermon region of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, home to Israel’s major surveillance, spying and air defense installations. Dozens of people were killed and thousands injured this week in a sophisticated attack targeting communications equipment used by Hezbollah operatives. Israel has not commented directly on the attacks, which several security sources have said were carried out by its spy agency Mossad. (Reuters)
