Manila: A storm triggered landslides and heavy rains in the northern Philippines, leaving several areas flooded and killing at least nine people as of Monday. In view of the situation, authorities have closed schools and suspended government work. According to the weather bureau, tropical storm Yagi was 115 km northeast of Infanta town in Quezon province, southeast of Manila, as of Monday noon, hitting at 75 kmph and gusting to 90 kmph.

The storm, known locally as Enteng, was moving northwest at 15 kilometers per hour near the east coast of Luzon’s main northern region. At least three people, including a pregnant woman, were killed Monday when a landslide hit two small shanties on a hill in Antipolo town in Rizal province, west of the capital, disaster mitigation officer Enrilo Bernardo Jr. said, adding that four other villagers drowned in overflowing streams.

Two more people were killed and 10 injured in landslides triggered by the typhoon in the central Philippines, national police spokesman Col. Gene Fajardo told reporters without giving details. Two locals were killed in bad weather in Naga City in eastern Camarines Sur province, police said, where floodwaters inundated several areas. Typhoon warnings were issued for large parts of Luzon, the country’s most populous region, including the Manila metropolitan area. Schools and most government offices were closed here due to the stormy weather.

Warning given to people
A siren sounded at dawn along the crowded banks of the Marikina River on the capital’s eastern outskirts, warning thousands of people to be ready to evacuate in case the river’s water level rises and the river swells due to heavy rains. Coast Guard personnel used boats and ropes to rescue and evacuate dozens of villagers trapped by floods in the provinces of Cavite, south of Manila, and Northern Samar in the country’s central region, the coast guard said.
