Olympic Council of Asia Head Randhir Singh: Randhir Singh is almost certain to become the chief of the Olympic Council of Asia as he is the only candidate left for the top post for the September 8 elections. If he becomes the chief, he will become the first Indian to head the Olympic Council of Asia. 77-year-old Randhir, a former member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and former secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), is currently the acting head of the continent’s top Olympic body.

The Olympic Council of Asia has informed that the OCA Election Commission can confirm that OCA Acting President Randhir Singh is the only candidate to be nominated for the General Assembly elections on September 8, 2024. According to the statement, the Election Committee, chaired by former Supreme Court of India Justice Rohinton Nariman, met today to review the CVs and necessary requirements of all nominated candidates submitted by the OCA member NOCs (National Olympic Committees) by the deadline of 21 July 2024 in accordance with the OCA Constitution, Election Rules. The Committee unanimously approved the nomination of Randhir Singh who was nominated by the NOC of India and supported by 27 member NOCs of the OCA.

Mongolian Olympic Committee chief withdraws his name from candidacy

Mongolian Olympic Committee President Battushig Batbold was deemed ineligible by the Election Committee as he did not meet the eligibility requirements set out in the relevant articles of the Constitution, which require that a candidate must either have served as the President of his NOC for at least eight years or as a member of the OCA Executive Board for at least eight years and be supported by two NOCs. The Election Committee was then informed by the Secretary General of the Mongolian NOC that Batbold had withdrawn his candidacy for the OCA President position.

National titles won during shooting career

Born in Patiala, Punjab, Randhir Singh is the son of long-time IOC member and IOA president Bhalindra Singh. He is the grandson of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. During his shooting career, Randhir won several national titles in both skeet and trap events. He became the first Indian shooter to win a gold medal at the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1978. Randhir participated in five Olympic Games in mixed trap from 1968 to 1984. He was the second Indian to participate in five Olympics after Karni Singh. He was the Secretary General of the IOA from 1987 to 2012 and was the vice-chairman of the organising committee of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
