The incident took place on Saturday when water flooded the basement of the Rao IAS coaching centre, which houses a library. Around 30 students were present in the basement at the time of the incident. The water level rose to around 10-12 feet, trapping several students. Some were rescued using ropes, while three students drowned.

The Rajya Sabha will discuss the death of three UPSC aspirants. Chairman Dhankhar referred to receiving a notice from members under Rule 267, who sought a discussion on the negligence of officials that led to the tragic deaths. He stressed the need to focus on the youth demographics in the country and reiterated his concerns about the commercial nature of coaching centres. Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal has given a notice for a discussion on the matter.

The issue was also raised in the Lok Sabha, where BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj criticised the Aam Aadmi Party government and demanded an inquiry into the incident. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over the incident and questioned whether action would be taken against coaching centres, suggesting the use of bulldozers as a metaphor for strict measures.
