Tomatoes can make you cry, Himachal suffers losses due to heavy rains, know what traders are saying - India TV Hindi

Tomato prices : The rising price of tomatoes can further trouble the common people. Traders of Delhi’s Azadpur Mandi say that due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh, the prices of tomatoes may increase in the coming days. Himachal Pradesh is the main supplier of this vegetable to many markets of North India. According to vegetable traders, heavy rains can damage crops as well as roads, which can disrupt the supply chain. This can increase prices.

Tomato is 70 rupees per kg in Delhi

According to the data of the Department of Consumer Affairs, the daily retail price of tomato in Delhi is around Rs 70 per kg. While in Mumbai it is around Rs 80 per kg. To provide relief from the rising prices of tomatoes, the National Co-operative Consumers Federation of India (NCCF) has started selling tomatoes at a discounted rate of Rs 60 per kg in the Delhi-NCR region from July 29. This has reduced the prices of tomatoes in the retail market somewhat. However, traders believe that it may increase again.

Last year the price had gone up to Rs 350 per kg

Last year too, due to heavy rains and floods, tomato prices had crossed Rs 350 per kg in some retail markets. This forced fast food chains like McDonald’s in North India to stop using tomatoes in some outlets as there were not enough tomatoes available to meet their quality standards.

Heavy rain predicted till August 7

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh till August 7. On Wednesday, several districts in the state, including Mandi, a major tomato producing area, received heavy rainfall. Rains during this season usually lead to a rise in vegetable prices as they affect the harvesting and packing of the crop. Rains also lead to more wastage of vegetables during transportation, which affects prices. However, this year tomato prices started rising in June itself in some markets, especially in South India, as large parts of the country experienced intense heat, which adversely affected horticultural crops.
