Soldiers searching in Wayanad

After the landslide tragedy in Wayanad district of Kerala, the administration is facing new challenges. As the rescue operation progresses, a large number of dead bodies and human body parts are being found here. Many of these bodies are those which could not be identified or whose relatives also died in this accident. The state government has issued other guidelines including collecting DNA and teeth samples for burying the dead bodies.

Many of the bodies recovered from landslide-affected areas have not been identified. As per the guidelines of the Disaster Management Department, each body or body part will be given an identification number and it will be clearly mentioned in all samples, photographs, videos and records of physical objects related to the bodies.

The administration will make every possible effort to identify

The order said that the police will make every effort to identify the bodies or human organs and if the bodies are still not identified, they will hand over the body to the district administration for further action after 72 hours of investigation. The guidelines issued on August 2 said, “The district administration will inform the Meppadi Panchayat and the panchayat or municipality in which the crematorium is located. In cases where the concerned doctor has advised in writing that the body should be buried immediately due to decomposition or other reasons, the body will be handed over to the district administration immediately without any waiting.

bodies will be buried

It said, “The bodies will only be buried.” The district administration has been directed to bury the bodies only after clearly displaying the identification number at the place of burial. The district administration has also been directed that the panchayat or municipality officials should be present at the place where the bodies will be buried. The guidelines said, “The district administration will have to keep necessary records of the details of the burial place for reference.” Similar guidelines are also in place for those bodies which have been identified but have not been claimed and whose identity is disputed or doubtful.

So far 215 bodies and 143 organs have been recovered

Four days after the massive landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district, 215 bodies and 143 human organs have been recovered from the affected areas so far. Meanwhile, 218 people are still missing. (Input- PTI language)
