Landslide wreaks havoc in Wayanad

Neetu Jojo, a female employee of a private hospital who was possibly the first to inform emergency services about the devastating landslide in Wayanad, Kerala on July 30, died before rescue teams could arrive. A recording of Neetu’s call seeking help for herself and a few other families trapped in their home after the devastating landslide in Choorlamalla has gone viral. In the recording, she can be heard narrating the details of the horror she experienced on the morning of July 30, when her house was hit by a landslide.

What was Neetu saying in the call recording?

In this call recording, Neetu is heard saying that water is flowing inside her house, which is surrounded by debris including cars swept away in the landslide. She says that five to six families living near her house have escaped nature’s fury by taking shelter in her house, which was comparatively safe. Neetu was probably one of the first to report the incident, but unfortunately she could not be saved and her body was found several days later.

Blood samples of relatives are being collected to identify the missing people

Meanwhile, the Kerala government has taken steps to identify the missing people in the landslide in Mundakkai area and has started collecting blood samples of survivors and relatives for DNA testing. While the health department has started collecting blood samples for DNA testing, the civil supplies department has started collecting details of ration cards, Aadhaar cards and linked phone numbers to identify the missing people. Samples from blood relatives are being collected for DNA testing to identify those bodies and body parts which are yet to be identified.

The health department said in a release, “In the first phase, DNA samples have been collected from unidentified bodies. The samples of survivors and relatives will be matched with the samples collected from unidentified bodies.” (With Bhasha inputs)
