A PIL filed in the Supreme Court demanded that the Election Commission be directed to ban the use of body parts as election symbols. Chief Justice- CJI D.Y. Chandrachud dismissed it saying what kind of petition is this. The CJI smiled and said that it has been filed only with the intention of stopping the hand symbol.
A PIL was filed in the Supreme Court demanding the Election Commission of India -ECI to remove, freeze and cancel election symbols resembling human body parts. The petition sought directions to the Election Commission. The petition said that it made several complaints against symbols resembling or similar to human body parts to ensure free and fair elections in India, but the Election Commission has not taken any action in this matter.
A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud heard the case on Monday. CJI Chandrachud said that this petition has been filed only with the intention of stopping the hand symbol (Congress election symbol). He immediately dismissed the petition.
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra said, “What kind of petition is this? The purpose of this petition is to get rid of the hand (Congress election symbol).”
CJI showed generosity in the court
On Monday itself, during the hearing of another case, an example of the generosity of the Chief Justice was also seen. CJI Chandrachud was presiding over a bench of three judges, when a man came to his court and said something to the Chief Justice about one of his petitions. On this, DY Chandrachud said that there is a delay in filing your petition. On this the man said that I am very ill and cannot pay the lawyer’s fee.
On this, Chief Justice Chandrachud while talking to senior lawyer Shoaib Alam in the court said that you should help him. And told that person that he is a big lawyer and will not take any fees from you.
