Dhaka: Over 100 people have died in incidents of violence across the country amid chaos that descended after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Bangladesh Prime Minister on Monday and left the country, several news reports said on Tuesday. After Monday’s unrest and tense overnight, the situation in Dhaka remained mainly calm on Tuesday morning, bdnews24.com news portal said. Buses and other public transport were seen on the roads and local shopkeepers also opened their shops, according to the report. Government vehicles were seen moving towards offices and several battery-operated rickshaws were also seen on the roads, the news portal reported.

Hasina resigned and left the country

Chaos spread in Bangladesh on Monday when Sheikh Hasina suddenly resigned from the post of Prime Minister and left the country in a military plane. As soon as the news of Hasina leaving the country spread, hundreds of people broke into her residence and vandalized and looted it. The protesters attacked Hasina’s residence ‘Sudha Sadan’ and other establishments in the capital and vandalized and set fire to it. Residences and business establishments of ministers, party MPs and leaders of Hasina’s Awami League government located in Dhaka and outside Dhaka were also targeted.

Attacks on Hindu temples

According to reports from various local media houses, 119 people have been killed in attacks on Hindu temples, violence and widespread looting in the capital and various other places. At least 109 people were killed in clashes in various parts of the country, including Dhaka, on Monday, the Bengali-language daily newspaper ‘Pratham Alo’ reported on Tuesday. Earlier, the newspaper had reported 98 deaths by 12 noon on Sunday and 16 more people were reported dead by midnight on Sunday. It said a total of 114 people died on Sunday. “With this, the total number of people who lost their lives in the violence in 21 days from July 16 to yesterday has gone up to 440,” the newspaper said. It said 37 bodies were brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital between 11 am and 8 pm on Monday. The newspaper, citing hospital sources, said 500 injured were brought to the hospital, many of whom had bullet injuries.
