Ever since Mohammed Muizzu’s government came to power in Maldives, its relations with India have been continuously bad. The tension had increased so much that even diplomatic talks between the two countries were not happening properly. But now Foreign Minister S Jaishankar is going to visit Maldives from 9-11 August. The Ministry of External Affairs said, the purpose of Jaishankar’s visit is to further strengthen the partnership between India and Maldives. This is sure to increase China’s tension. On the other hand, Jaishankar’s visit to Maldives after the uproar in neighboring country Bangladesh is very important diplomatically.
The Ministry of External Affairs said, Jaishankar’s visit is taking place after the visit of Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu to India. Mohammed Muizzu had come to Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Modi government. The visit of the Foreign Minister is also very important because due to the tension, he has not visited Maldives since January 2023. The ministry said in its statement, Maldives is a major maritime neighbor of India. It is very important for India’s Neighborhood First Policy and our vision ‘SAGAR’. The purpose of this visit is to strengthen the partnership and find ways to advance bilateral relations.
