BJP’s SC/ST MPs met PM Modi

A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed concern over the Supreme Court’s remarks on identifying creamy layer among Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). “Met a delegation of SC/ST MPs today. Reiterated our commitment and resolve for the welfare and empowerment of SC/ST communities,” Modi said in a post on ‘X’ after the meeting. Supreme Court judge Justice BR Gavai had on August 1 said states should formulate a policy to identify creamy layer among SCs and STs and deny them reservation benefits.

The delegation met PM Modi

BJP Rajya Sabha member Sikandar Kumar, who was part of the delegation, told PTI-Bhasha, “We were all worried about the Supreme Court’s order. We were getting calls from people expressing concern over this matter.” He said in the Parliament complex, “A delegation of MPs representing SC and ST met the Prime Minister this morning and expressed their concern in this regard.” Kumar said that the Prime Minister had a serious discussion with the MPs and assured that the government will not allow the apex court’s order to be implemented.” He said, “We express our gratitude to the Prime Minister for this.” BJP MP Faggan Singh Kulaste said that the delegation urged in the memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister that the apex court’s order should not be implemented on the issue of creamy layer.

Arjun Ram Meghwal said this

He said, “The Prime Minister also had the same opinion. He assured us that he will look into the matter. He also told us not to worry.” Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said in the Lok Sabha on Friday that opposition parties should not mislead the society over the Supreme Court’s comment allowing states to make sub-classification within Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). Replying to a supplementary question by Shiv Sena (UBT) member Bhausaheb Wakchoure during Question Hour in the House, he said that the court has not given any decision, only made comments. Meghwal said, “The reference to creamy layer in the sub-classification of SC-ST is the comment of a Supreme Court judge, not part of the decision. The member should not try to mislead the society.”

Arjun Ram Meghwal said- no proposal to give reservation is under consideration

He said that there is no provision of reservation for SC-ST in the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha or Legislative Councils in various states. Meghwal said, “There is no proposal pending to provide reservation to SC/ST in the Rajya Sabha.” In a majority decision, the Supreme Court had recently said that the states have the right to make sub-classification in the reservation fixed for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for the upliftment of more deprived castes. A seven-member constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, by a majority of 6:1, ruled that states can be allowed to make sub-classification in Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), so that it can be ensured that more backward castes are given reservation within these groups.
