The Cabinet on Friday approved the proposal to build 3 crore more houses in different parts of the country under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 2.0. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the proposal to build 2 crore additional houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural) and 1 crore additional houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).
Proposal to build 2 crore houses in rural areas
According to an official statement, the Cabinet has approved the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) during the financial year 2024-25 to 2028-29. According to the statement, it provides for construction of more than 2 crore houses at the existing per house assistance of Rs 1.20 lakh in the plain areas and Rs 1.30 lakh in the states of the North Eastern region and the hilly states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Provision of Rs 3,06,137 crore for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural)
The Cabinet approved continuation of the scheme from April 2024 to March 2029. A total expenditure of Rs 3,06,137 crore has been provisioned for the period up to FY 2028-29. This will include a central share of Rs 2,05,856 crore and a state share of Rs 1,00,281 crore. The incomplete houses of the previous phase of PMAY-Gramin till March 31 this year will also be completed during FY 2024-25 at the current rates. The statement said that about 10 crore people are expected to benefit from the proposed 2 crore houses.
Government will provide assistance of Rs 2.30 lakh crore for urban planning
Apart from this, under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), the government will provide assistance of Rs 2.30 lakh crore to 1 crore people in the next 5 years for construction of new houses, purchase of new houses and renting of new houses.
