The countrywide strike of doctors is having the worst effect on the health of patients. The case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has become so serious that resident doctors across the country have gone on strike and are protesting. In such a situation, it has become difficult for even the most serious patients to get treatment. Today’s patient figures in Delhi AIIMS, one of India’s largest hospitals, are quite shocking. This shows how many patients are facing difficulties due to the strike.
The status report of the second day of the strike, i.e. 13th August, from the Medical Superintendent of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, Dr. Nirupam Madan, shows that due to the doctors’ strike, emergency services in AIIMS ran normally like other days. During this period, a total of 393 patients were treated in all four emergency departments of AIIMS.

What is the fault of these patients?…. Somebody’s surgery got postponed, somebody returned from OPD, the doctor said – strike till 15th
Doctors were also deployed in ICU services which are emergency services and ICU services were normal throughout the day in AIIMS. However, a big decrease was seen in Out Patient Department i.e. OPD services. From the main OPD of the hospital to Surgical Block, RPC, JPNATC, Mother and Child Block, Cancer Institute, a total of 5134 patients were seen in all OPDs. Which was about 66 percent less than normal days. In such a situation, due to the absence of doctors in OPD, many patients returned without getting themselves examined in OPD.
These patients faced trouble
Due to the doctors’ strike, surgery patients are facing the most problems in AIIMS. Patients who had booked their operation dates months ago had to return home without surgery on Tuesday. AIIMS statistics show that only 70 major and 13 minor surgeries could be performed in the operation theatres of 10 departments of AIIMS. In such a situation, there was a 90 percent decrease in surgeries compared to other days and so many patients had to return home without treatment in frustration.
Admission of patients also reduced
Not only OPD, the number of patients admitted in the hospital also reduced considerably. Due to the absence of senior and junior resident doctors, only 330 patients could be admitted in the hospital. Out of these, 250 patients were admitted in the main hospital including all the blocks. This number was 65 percent less compared to other days.
There was an impact on tests ranging from labs
Due to this strike, many patients could not get their tests done despite having an appointment. Whereas even for tests, patients have to wait for months after taking an appointment. On August 13, tests decreased by 25 percent and only 17095 lab tests could be done in NCI and JPNATC. Apart from this, there was a 40 percent decrease in radiological tests. Patients kept wandering to get X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan done. Tests done in serious diseases like cancer, PET scan etc. also decreased by 20 percent. However, the blood bank continued to function smoothly.
