New Delhi. The country is celebrating its 78th Independence Day today. Music continues to play an important role in the celebration of our glorious 78 years of independence. Songs like ‘Chak De India’ and ‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’ fill our veins with enthusiasm. On the other hand, when it comes to famous patriotic songs, we cannot hold back our tears on songs like ‘Kar Chale Hum Fida’ and ‘Ae Mere Pyare Watan’. Today we remind you of those famous songs, which were not a part of any film, but became evergreen patriotic songs.
‘The best in the world’
The great poet Iqbal described Akhand Hindustan in his poem ‘Saare Jahan Se Achcha’, which included Bangladesh, Pakistan and modern India. The newly independent nation was born exactly one day after this poem was published on August 16, 1904, 43 years ago. The song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar.
‘Vande Mataram’
Bankim Chandra composed this song in 1875 and since then, it has been translated and reinterpreted in many ways. On India’s 50th Independence anniversary, AR Rahman decided to give the song a beats-infused makeover and updated the track to reflect the current era of India.
‘Go step by step’
The Indian National Army, founded by Subhash Chandra Bose, uses this song as its regimental quick march. Its lyrics were written by Vanshidhar Shukla, an Awadhi poet and freedom fighter from Lakhimpur Kheri. After World War II, this song was outlawed in India due to charges of treason. Then in August 1947, the ban was lifted and now it is recognized as a patriotic song in India.
‘O people of my country’
The song was first performed by Lata Mangeshkar at Ramlila Maidan in front of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on January 27, 1963, two months after the Indo-China war ended. The song, which honours the Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the conflict, was written by Kavi Pradeep and composed by C Ramachandra.
‘Salute to you mother’
This patriotic song, which is part of this list, is part of the album ‘Vande Mataram’. Written and sung by Mehboob and AR Rahman, it was composed keeping the motherland in mind. The album came in the year 1997 and soon became the best-selling non-film album in Indian history.
