Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that Ukrainian troops have crossed into Russian territory and taken full control of the Russian city of Sudzha in the Kursk region. The city, one of the largest captured by Ukraine so far, had a population of about 5,000 before the war. Zelensky said an office of the Ukrainian military commander was being set up in Sudzha. He did not elaborate on the functioning of the office. These claims could not be independently confirmed.
Ukraine army attacked Kursk
The Russian city of Sudja is about 10 km from the Ukrainian border. Its population is about 5,000. Russia has a gas pipeline station here. With its help, it supplies gas to European countries. According to Ukrainian military chief Oleksandr Sirsky, Ukraine has captured 1,150 square kilometers of Russian territory. Ukraine launched an attack on Russia’s Kursk region on August 6.
The army is advancing
Earlier, Ukrainian army commander Oleksandr Sirsky said in a video posted for President Vladimir Zelensky that Ukraine now occupies 74 settlements in the Kursk region. He said that the Ukrainian army is continuously advancing and has gained control over 15 square miles of territory.
Russia sent weapons
On the other hand, the Russian Defense Ministry has said that it is sending more forces and weapons to Kursk, where Ukrainian soldiers have crossed the border and entered Russian territory. According to Russia’s Sted Media, the Defense Ministry has sent BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launchers, cannons, tanks and military trucks to Sudzhansky in Kursk. Recently, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry claimed that Russia has carried out more than two thousand attacks from the Kursk region with anti-aircraft missiles, cannons, mortars, drones, glide bombs and more than 100 missiles.
