The injured are being treated in the hospital after the attack on students in Nigeria.
Abuja: Gunmen have ambushed vehicles carrying university students in Nigeria’s north-central region and carried out a major attack. The attackers kidnapped at least 20 students during this attack, which has created panic in north-central Nigeria. Several students were injured in the attack and have been admitted to hospital. Police gave this information on Friday. Benue State Police spokesperson Catherine Annen said that the students were ambushed in Benue on Thursday evening when they were heading south to attend a conference of medical students.
The attack took place on the Benue Otukpo road, where kidnappings are a common occurrence. Such incidents of kidnapping are common in parts of northern Nigeria. Dozens of armed groups take advantage of limited security arrangements to attack villages and major roads. Most victims are released only after a ransom is paid. Due to these attacks, many people have stopped traveling by road.
The attacking group could not be traced
The students kidnapped in Benue were from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos in northern Nigeria. Student groups at these universities condemned the attacks and urged authorities to ensure the release of the kidnapped passengers. It was not yet clear which group carried out the attack and where the hostages were taken. Police have not given any information about rescue efforts. (AP)
