Nowadays, one shocking case after another of online fraud is coming up. The latest case is of fraud in the name of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. A fraudster tried to extort money from a person by using the picture of Chief Justice of India Chandrachud. According to the screenshot going viral, the fraudster who claimed to be CJI Chandrachud sent a message on WhatsApp to a person that he only needs Rs 500. The fraudster also said that he will return the money after reaching the court.
According to a report by News18, the scammer wrote on WhatsApp, “Hello, I am the CJI and we have an important meeting in the Collegium and I am stuck in Connaught Place. Can you send me Rs 500 for a cab? I will return the money once I reach the court.” The scammer then sent another message to make it look genuine. The sign-off reads, “Sent from iPad.” Taking cognizance of this fraudulent message, the Supreme Court of India registered a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell on August 27 on the direction of CJI Chandrachud.
How to avoid online fraud
Do not click on unknown links: Avoid clicking on unknown or suspicious links you receive on WhatsApp. These links may introduce viruses or malware to your device.
Do not share personal information: Do not share your bank account, OTP, passwords, or other sensitive information with any unknown person or message from unverified sources.
Verify: Check the authenticity of any message coming from an unknown number. Fraudsters often use the names of authentic brands or individuals. Like they have used the name of CJI Chandrachud in this case.
Report fraud: If you receive a suspicious message or call, report it to WhatsApp immediately. This can also protect others in the future.
Read and understand carefully: Read and understand any offer or tempting message carefully. If something seems too good to be true, it could possibly be a scam.
Block unknown calls and messages: If someone is constantly harassing you from an unknown number, block them and report them to WhatsApp.
