The Election Commission issued a statement on Saturday saying that this decision has been taken in view of the upcoming festivals. In Haryana, people of Vishnoi community have been celebrating the festival of Asoj Amavasya in memory of their Guru Jambeshwar for centuries, so this decision has been taken respecting their traditions and voting rights. The date of voting in Haryana and Jammu Kashmir on October 1 has been changed, now voting will be held on October 5. At the same time, the counting of votes to be held on October 4 in both the states will be held on October 8.
It is worth noting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) had demanded the Election Commission to change the date. Both the parties had requested the Election Commission to postpone the election date to October 1 due to religious festivals and public holidays. It was said in the request that there is a holiday on Saturday and Sunday on September 29 and 30. After this, there is a holiday on October 2 due to Gandhi Jayanti. In such a situation, people can take advantage of the holiday and go out of the city, which can reduce the percentage of voting.
