Ankara, Sep 3 (IANS) Two US soldiers were attacked in Izmir, Turkey by some young men who are members of a right-wing Turkish youth group.
The local governor’s office confirmed the incident and said that 15 people involved in the attack have been detained. The Turkiye Youth Union (TGB) has claimed responsibility for the attack.
He issued a statement saying, “We attacked American soldiers stationed on America’s largest attack ship USS Wasp. The hands of American soldiers are stained with the blood of our soldiers and thousands of Palestinians. That is why they cannot desecrate our country. Whenever you step on this land, we will give you the welcome you deserve.”
TGB has also shared the video of the incident on social media platform X. At the same time, the US Embassy in Turkey confirmed the attack and said that the soldiers are now safe.
“We can confirm reports that US service members aboard the US Wasp were attacked in Izmir today but are now safe. We thank Turkish authorities for their prompt action,” it said in a statement.
Turkiye media reports cited a statement from the Izmir governor’s office saying that members of the nationalist party’s youth wing attacked two US soldiers in Konak City.
He said in the statement that five US soldiers intervened after the incident. All 15 attackers have been detained and an investigation into the case has been started.
