History News Desk!! Kamalapati Tripathi (English: Kamalapati Tripathi, born: 3 September, 1905; died: 8 October, 1990, Varanasi) was an Indian politician, writer, journalist and freedom fighter. He was a senior Indian National Congress leader from Varanasi constituency. He was a member of the Constituent Assembly. Kamalapati Tripathi also served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Union Minister of Railways.
Kamlapati Tripathi was born on 3 September 1905. His father’s name was Pandit Narayanpati Tripathi. He originally belonged to the Tripathi family of Pandi, popularly called Pandi Tiwari. His ancestors settled in Varanasi during the time of Aurangzeb. He did his Shastri degree and D.Litt from Kashi Vidyapeeth. He started his career as a journalist working for the daily English newspaper ‘Aaj’ and later ‘Sansar’. He was also the editor of two tabloids. He got married at the age of 19. He had 5 children, three sons and two daughters. His eldest son was Lokpati Tripathi, who was a minister in Uttar Pradesh and his second son is Mayapati Tripathi, who founded a social organization named All India Kisan Mazdoor Vahini. His youngest son is Mangalapati Tripathi (also known as Shashipati Tripathi).
Kamalapati Tripathi was also a freedom fighter. He participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement during 1921. He was also an active participant in the Civil Disobedience Movement for which he was imprisoned. In 1942, he went to Mumbai to participate in the movement when he was arrested and sent to jail for three years.
Kamalpati Tripathi remained the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 4 April 1971 to 12 June 1973. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1973 to 1978, 1978 to 1980 and 1985 to 1986. He was a member of the Lok Sabha from 1980 to 1984.
Kamlapati Tripathi was the Union Minister of Railways between 1975 and 1977 and sometime before 1980. He presented the Railway Budget of India from 1975 to 1976, 1976 to 1977 and 1980 to 1981. Kamlapati Tripathi started the diesel loco shed in Pune during his tenure. During his tenure, he introduced the following trains-
