National Nutrition Week: Understand these things soon or else you too can be a victim of Vitamin D deficiency

New Delhi, September 3 (IANS). Children playing outside the house, Babuji sitting in the sun reading the newspaper, or women stepping out of the door to do household chores – all these are a thing of the past and are rarely seen now. In the age of home delivery, people do not take the trouble of going out and the result is that the body is not getting the nutrients which are our ‘life’.

Working on nutrition related measures, ‘National Nutrition Week’ is celebrated every year from 1st September to 7th September in India. IANS is also working to make people aware in this regard. Today we will talk about Vitamin D deficiency. We will try to know what health problems can people face due to Vitamin D deficiency.

Today, about 80 to 90 percent of the country’s population is suffering from vitamin D deficiency. Last year, a survey conducted by the Tata Group revealed that one out of every four people in India is suffering from vitamin D deficiency.

The survey also talks about its causes. It is stated that less exposure to sunlight, poor lifestyle and eating habits are the main causes of Vitamin D deficiency.

In the last few years, it has been observed that there has been a jump in the number of people getting their vitamin D tests done. To gather information about this, IANS spoke to Dr. Yugam Prasad Shandilya, Senior Resident of ESIC (Indira Gandhi) Hospital, Jhilmil, Delhi. He told that about 200 patients are coming to his hospital every day with complaints of vitamin D deficiency.

Many kinds of thoughts come to people’s mind regarding Vitamin D, such as we stay in the sun all day, how can we have a deficiency of Vitamin D? Let us tell you that Vitamin D is a natural substance found in our body. Which we get from sunlight. In a country like India, people can get it by spending 30 to 40 minutes in the sun in a day. People think that we roam around outside every day, then why the extra sunlight?

Those who claim that we spend 30 to 40 minutes in the sun every day, then why is our vitamin D low, then one of the biggest reasons behind this is that we go out but do not let even a single ray of sunlight fall on our body. We cover our body with clothes as much as possible, go out after applying sunscreen. In such a situation, vitamin D does not reach the body. This is the reason why so many people in our country are suffering from vitamin D deficiency today.

Experts say that earlier people used to complete most of their work by sitting in the sun. But in the present times, on the contrary, we prefer to do all our daily work by sitting within the four walls of our homes. Children have also started coming out of their homes less, instead of playing outside in the sun, they prefer to spend time on their mobiles and tablets, due to this also most of the children are becoming victims of Vitamin D deficiency.

IANS spoke to Dr. Bharat Chaudhary, General Surgeon at Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital, regarding Vitamin D deficiency.

Dr. Bharat Chaudhary said, “Vitamin D helps in strengthening our bones. It is very important for the body. It also helps in keeping our immunity system healthy.”

How to know if you are suffering from Vitamin D deficiency? On this question, Dr. Bharat says, “Nowadays people rarely go out in the sun, due to which they have to face Vitamin D deficiency. This deficiency can also occur due to obesity or wrong eating habits. Mostly it is seen in people who eat vegetarian food.”

He further said, “A person who is deficient in vitamin D experiences symptoms like feeling tired all day, bone pain, falling sick frequently and slow healing of wounds.”

To overcome the deficiency of Vitamin D, Dr. Bharat Chaudhary advised, “You can also cure it with a homemade diet. For this, apart from orange juice and dairy products, you can also consume fish and eggs.”

He also said that if the problem is getting severe then definitely consult a doctor for it.
