Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that it has informed Brazil of its decision, which will come into effect immediately. The ministry said that Venezuela was forced to take this step because it had received information that people who have taken refuge in the Argentine embassy want to assassinate President Nicolas Maduro and Vice President Delcy Rodriguez and are plotting to carry out “terrorist” acts. This move by Venezuela is proof of the growing tension between the two countries. The Argentine President had accused Maduro of rigging in the presidential elections held in Venezuela in July.
Maduro won the recent elections
The country’s election officials had declared Maduro the winner, but the opposition claimed that the majority of the people were in its favor. Thousands of people were arrested across the country after the election. Magaly Menda, who was the campaign chief of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, was among those government opponents whose arrest was ordered in March by Maduro’s chief prosecutor, accusing them of promoting political violence. After this, Menda took refuge in the Argentine ambassador’s residence. Maduro had ended the country’s diplomatic relations with the right-wing government of Argentine President Javier Melli, which had resorted to neighboring Brazil to protect its interests and protect refugees.

Menda said in a post on social media that armored police vehicles have been parked outside the residence of the Argentine ambassador since Friday. Electricity has also been cut off at the diplomatic mission and raids could be conducted to arrest him and others who raise their voice against the government.
