Four members of a family were bitten by a snake in Odisha’s Boudh district on Sunday night. Three sisters died of snakebite while their father is in critical condition, police said on Monday. Police said the incident took place in Chariapali village in Tikarpada panchayat area on Sunday night. The victims have been identified as Smriterekha Malik (12), Subharekha Malik (nine) and Surabhi Malik (three), police said. Their father was also bitten by a snake and is currently being treated in a hospital, police said.
The krait snake bitten!
Surendra Malik, a resident of Chariyapali village, was sleeping with his family. At night, when his daughters’ health started deteriorating, the whole family woke up. The girls were having trouble breathing. Surendra saw that a snake was crawling nearby. He called his wife for help. All four were immediately taken to the district hospital. All three girls were declared dead in the hospital. Surendra has been referred from Boudh District Hospital to VIMSAR Medical College Burla. Surendra’s condition also remains critical. Doctors say that it is possible that a krait snake may have bitten the three sisters.
Odisha government gives assistance of Rs 4 lakh
Let us tell you that every year about 2500 to 6 thousand people are bitten by snakes in Odisha. Out of these, 400 to 900 people die every year. At least 1011 people died due to snake bite in 2023-24. This year also, so far 240 people have lost their lives due to snake bite. The Odisha government gives an assistance amount of four lakh rupees to the families of people who die due to snake bite.
