One such small budget film which did not have any superstar did not succeed at the box office, but later it got cult status. The film we are talking about took 21 years to be made, the producers refused to make it, somehow it was made but did not run in theaters, then it became a hit on OTT. This film is none other than Tumbbad.
how is the story
Tumbbad is a small budget Indian English language folklore horror film directed by Rahi Anil Barve. The film is produced by Sohum Shah, Anand L. Rai, Mukesh Shah and Amita Shah. Starring Sohum Shah in the lead role of Vinayak Rao, the film is the story of the search for a hidden treasure in the 20th century in an Indian village called Tumbbad in Maharashtra. But did you know that writer-director Rahi Anil Barve wrote the first draft of ‘Tumbbad’ in 1997? The title of the film was taken from Shripad Narayan Pendse’s Marathi novel Tumbbadche Khot. According to media reports, Rahi wrote a 700-page storyboard in 2009-2010.
a difficult film to make
It was first started in 2008. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was cast in the lead role in the film. Suddenly the producers backed out of the film and due to this the film could not be made and the shooting was stopped. ‘Tumbbad’ finally came on the floors in 2012. However during editing, Anil was not satisfied with the film. So the film was rewritten and shot in the year 2015. According to Anil Barve, many producers refused to support the project, ‘Nothing of this kind had ever been done before in English cinema.’ The film was shot over 5 years and 4 monsoons. Due to this, the budget of the film became much more than expected and then the hero of the film, the producer sold his house and car for the film.
Soham told the whole story
In an interview to Aaj Tak, Soham told that he even sold his house and car to complete the film. ‘By the time the film was made, I was financially exhausted. In these seven years, I had to sell my flat, then some more properties and finally my car.’ Then filmmaker Anand L Rai produced the film and finally it was released in 2018. Made in Rs 5 crore, the film earned only Rs 13 crore at the box office. However, when it came on OTT, it won everyone’s heart and became a hit. Now the film has been released in theaters again. Despite being a flop at the box office in the last few years, the film has achieved cult status.
