New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) Former Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia on the demise of CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said, “He was a source of inspiration for me”. Whenever I met him, he always greeted me with warmth. He will always be missed and no one can replace him.
Sisodia said, he had a deep understanding of national issues and their solutions. He was a person who could bring together people who could implement these solutions. He served the country throughout his political life. We are proud that he was a part of our country. When I was a journalist, he was our source of inspiration. He used to meet with warmth. We will miss him all our lives, no one can take his place.
Let us tell you that Sitaram Yechury died on Thursday at the age of 72. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on August 19, where he breathed his last.
Born on August 12, 1952 in Chennai to a Telugu-speaking family, Sitaram Yechury got involved in student politics while studying at JNU. He adopted Marxist principles and became a member of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M). He holds the record of becoming the president of the JNU Students Union three times.
Yechury, who courted arrest during the Emergency, later became the All India President of the SFI. He, along with his colleague Prakash Karat, played a key role in making JNU an impregnable leftist bastion. He became a member of the CPI(M) Central Committee at the age of 32 and a member of the party’s Polit Bureau at the age of 40.
As a Rajya Sabha member, he worked to enrich the debates and democratic traditions in Parliament. Due to this, he earned the respect of even his political opponents. While adopting inclusive ideas during the period of coalition government, he maintained his unwavering commitment to the principles of Marxism.
