Mehbooba Mufti calls BJP's claims of progress in Jammu and Kashmir 'false'

Kulgam, September 15 (IANS) As the dates of Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections are getting closer, political rhetoric has intensified. In this episode, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday launched a verbal attack on the BJP.

Talking to reporters in Kulgam, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said it was shameful that the government repeatedly claimed that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir had improved but no elections had been held for the past decade. She said people were frustrated and feeling suffocated.

Mufti said that the residents of Jammu and Kashmir want a government that resolves their issues. He said that the PDP is contesting the elections to ensure that the BJP cannot suppress the issues and the voice of Kashmir is heard.

Mufti promised that the PDP will work to eliminate unemployment by providing one lakh government jobs and regularising 60,000 existing posts.

He criticised the Prime Minister’s “unfulfilled” promises, including two crore jobs and transferring Rs 15 lakh to every citizen’s account, and said the PDP will raise the voice of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and work to solve their problems.

It is noteworthy that there are 90 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Of these, 47 are in the valley and 43 in the Jammu region. Of these, nine seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) and seven for Scheduled Castes (SC).

The elections will be held in three phases. The first phase will be on September 18, the second on September 25 and the last phase on October 1. The results will be declared on October 8.
