Kolkata. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has accepted 3 out of 5 demands of the agitating doctors and has decided to remove Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and Deputy Commissioner (North). Mamata Banerjee has also accepted the doctors’ demand to remove the Director of Health Services and Director of Medical Education. Even after this, the doctors have announced to continue the agitation. The agitating doctors say that not all their demands have been accepted. The demands accepted by Mamata Banerjee after a long meeting have been described by the agitating doctors as their fundamental victory. The agitating doctors also say that there is a hearing in the RG Kar Medical College case in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The doctors are also waiting for the court hearing.
The protesting doctors say that CM Mamata Banerjee has decided to remove many officers including the Kolkata Police Commissioner, but our demand to remove the Principal Secretary of the Health Department was not accepted. The doctors say that corruption takes place in the Health Department under the protection of the Principal Secretary. The protesting doctors also say that in the meeting Mamata Banerjee said that CCTVs will be installed for their security and a committee will be formed under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, but there was very little discussion in the meeting on the nature of the threat. The protesting doctors say that the protest will continue and the next step will be decided after talking to other protesters and watching the Supreme Court hearing.
The doctors’ agitation started after the sensational case of rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on the intervening night of 8 and 9 August 2024. Today is the 39th day of the doctors’ agitation. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee proposed talks with the doctors several times, but the meeting could not take place. The reason for this was that the doctors were demanding live streaming or video recording of the meeting. The meeting of the agitating doctors with Mamata Banerjee on Monday became possible when the government accepted the doctors’ demand to write the minutes of the meeting. It is believed that the doctors’ agitation may end by late tonight.
