Washington: Elon Musk’s Neuralink “Blindsight Chip” has done the biggest miracle of the 21st century. Through this chip, now even those people will be able to see the world, who are blind from both eyes since birth or who have lost their optic nerve. This chip will be implanted in the blind. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given permission to Elon Musk’s Neuralink to implant the ‘Blindsight’ chip. For this, the Blindsight chip has been given the Breakthrough Device tag by the FDA.
American industrialist Elon Musk’s brain-chip startup Neuralink said on Tuesday that its experimental implant aimed at restoring vision has received the US FDA’s “breakthrough device” designation. The FDA’s breakthrough tag is given to certain medical devices that are capable of providing treatment or diagnosis of life-threatening conditions. Its purpose is to accelerate development and review of devices currently under development.

Elon Musk tweeted on Twitter after the BlindSight chip received FDA approval, “This experimental device known as BlindSight will enable people who have lost both their eyes and optic nerve to see.” However, Neuralink did not immediately respond to a request seeking details about when the BlindSight device hopes to go into human trials. Neuralink, founded in 2016 by Musk and a group of engineers, is building a brain chip interface that can be implanted within the skull. Musk says that it can eventually restore vision along with allowing disabled patients to walk and communicate again.

Neuralink’s device consists of a chip that processes and transmits neural signals that can be transmitted to devices such as computers or phones. The startup is separately testing an implant that gives paralysed patients the ability to use digital devices by thinking alone, raising a possibility that could help patients with spinal cord injuries.

The trial is expected to enroll three patients to evaluate its device, which could take several years to complete, according to details on the U.S. government’s clinical trial database.
