Tokyo/Taipei: The entry of a Chinese warship into Japan’s waters has created a stir. Japan has claimed that a Chinese aircraft carrier entered its adjacent waters for the first time today. Japan’s Defense Ministry said, this is the latest in a series of military maneuvers, which has increased tensions between the neighbors. When the Chinese carrier along with its two destroyers passed between Japan’s southern Yonaguni and Iriomote islands, there was panic in the Japanese camp.
Japan has claimed the Chinese carrier entered a zone that extends 24 nautical miles from its coastline, where Japan can exert certain controls as defined by the United Nations. Japan’s Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroshi Moriya said Tokyo has conveyed its “serious concerns” to Beijing and described the incident as “completely unacceptable from the point of view of the security environment in Japan and the region.” “We will continue to closely monitor the activities of Chinese naval ships in the waters around our country and take all possible measures to gather more information and maintain vigilance and monitoring,” Moriya said at a news conference.
China is doing such things again and again
This is not the first time China has illegally attempted to enter another country’s territory; it has done so several times before. Japan lodged a protest with China last month when one of its naval survey ships entered Japanese waters shortly after violating Hawaiian space. In July, a Japanese navy destroyer made a rare entry into China’s territorial waters near Taiwan, according to Japanese media. Increased Chinese military activity around Japan and Taiwan in recent years has raised concerns in Tokyo. (Reuters)
