Joint Pain Treatment: Usually the cause of knee pain is arthritis. Sometimes arthritis causes sudden severe pain which makes people writhe in pain. Pain is relieved after taking medicine but it takes time. In such a situation, some people recommend applying ice while some people suggest applying hot compress. But to get instant relief from pain, will ice compress provide more relief or a heating pad? Cleveland Clinic Rheumatologist Rachel Rosen of the University of Pennsylvania explains when to use a heating pad and when to use ice.
Both methods are easy
First let us know whether heating pad or ice provides relief from arthritis pain or not. Dr. Rachel Rosen says that both these methods are very easy and get the job done without spending money. Dr. Rosen said that ice reduces swelling in the numb area, while heat loosens the muscles, increases flexibility and speeds up blood circulation. Heat therapy dilates blood vessels, which improves circulation.
Is It Safe to Use Heat for Arthritis Pain?
Dr. Rosen says that yes, it is absolutely true that if you apply a heating pad to the painful area, it will provide relief from arthritis pain. For this, you can also use a heating pad, but dip a soft towel in hot water and squeeze it and apply it to the affected area for 20 minutes. Keep the towel as hot as you can bear. Bathing with lukewarm water will also be beneficial. For this, you can also use a moist heat pad or damp wash cloth. Heat it in a microwave for 20 seconds and then apply it to the affected area. Applying hot things will relax the muscles and reduce swelling in the muscles, while the joint will become loose, which will provide relief from pain. However, whenever you apply hot things, always be cautious because very hot things can burn the skin. Always keep the temperature slightly higher than the body temperature and then apply.
ice compress
However, when arthritis pain starts to bother you, the most convenient way is to quickly take out ice from the fridge and rub it on the painful area. Doing this for 20 minutes will give a lot of relief from pain. Dr. Rosen says that you can also use frozen peas and ice cubes from the fridge. This will also cure arthritis pain. This will remove inflammation and also reduce swelling.
Who will get relief quickly
Dr. Rosen says that both methods are good for getting relief from arthritis pain. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Since every person’s body is different, it is difficult to say which method gives quick relief. It depends on the symptoms of the person. Some people will get quick relief from ice and some from heat. If you are very confused about this, you can meet your doctor.
